Ruma National park is Kenya’s last remaining sanctuary for the endangered roan antelope. Ruma lies on the flat floor of the seasonally watered Lambwe River Valley bordered by the Kanyamwa Escarpment to the South-East, and by the volcanic plugs of the Ruri Hills to the north. Ruma’s birdlife is exceptional. So our main mission was to go explore the park and look for the endangered antelopes.The park is also the only protected area in Kenya where the globally threatened blue swallow, a scarce intra-African migrant, is regularly recorded. Blue swallows, which depend upon moist grassland for both feeding and roosting, arrive in Kenya from their breeding grounds in Southern Tanzania around April and depart again in September. The drive from Nairobi to Homabay county took approximately 6hrs. We started our journey at 3:00AM, Our driver Simon was on time with his amazing 7 seater land cruiser. Our journey to lakeside took 6hrs including the stopovers for sight seeing, visiting bathrooms and breakfast. The first stop was in Nakuru where we had breakfast at a franchised coffee cafe, did some few shopping and continued with our journey. We arrived around 9:00AM and headede to our hotel to settle in and chilling by the lake victoria as we await evening game drive. At around 4:00PM, we were picked by the cruiser, destination- Ruma. The drive from the town to the park was smooth due to good roads which is 42km from Homabya town but we diverted at a rough road which took around 20 minutes to reach one of the main gates. The park fees for citizens and forigners is reseonable, payment is cashless, so prepare some Mpesa or card payment. The park is covered in beautifull long savannah grass and land cruiser is the best vehicle to visit the park with, we saw some nissans vehicles but i would highly recomend cruiser. The park offers various attractions whereby it gives visitors an opportunity to see various wildlife species including the Rothschild’s giraffe, serval cat, hyena, impala, vervet monkey, roan antelope, oribi, bohor reedbuck, leopard, buffalo, and Jackson’s hartebeest. Recently introduced and re-introduced species are Black rhino,White rhino, Burchell′s zebra whose populations.The roan antelope, Oribi and Jackson’s hartebeest are easily spotted in Ruma than anywhere else in Kenya. The park has an exceptional snake population. Easily spotted species include: The African spitting cobra, forest cobra, python, eastern green mamba, black-mouthed mamba and puff adder. The park also abounds in lizard, skink and gecko not forgetting birdlife is exceptional there. The park is also the only protected area in Kenya where the globally threatened blue swallow, as i mentioned. The game drive took 2hrs where we got to see all the animals and took few pictures with our phone, most of the animals are far, so good binoculars is necessary and good camera that can zoom in. Otherwise the game drive was worth it and we were glad to make that decision of visiting the park because it is giraffes paradise if you are crazy about giraffes as i am. We ended our game drive and headed to rusinga island. The park is less visited compared to other national park in Kenya, i would say it is a definetly a hidden gem.
