7-Day Homa Bay Safari Itinerary | Lake Victoria & Ruma National Park
· Updated

When most travelers think of a “Kenya safari,” they picture the Mara. However, western Kenya has its own charm. Here, you’ll find wide lake horizons, quiet roads, and wildlife experiences that feel personal. Homa Bay County sits on the shores of Lake Victoria and is home to Ruma National Park, one of Kenya’s best spots to look for the rare roan antelope. Here’s a 7-day itinerary that Nyota Tours can tailor to your pace, interests, and comfort level.
Best Time to Go
Homa Bay is a year-round destination. For easier game drives and clearer views, the drier months are typically best. If you love lush landscapes and dramatic skies over the lake, the greener months can be beautiful too. Just tell us your travel dates, and we’ll recommend the best routing and lodge options.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival & Lakeside Welcome
Arrive in western Kenya and transfer to Homa Bay town or a quiet lakeside property. Settle in, enjoy a relaxed evening, and watch the sun drop into Lake Victoria. It’s one of the most underrated sunsets in the country!
Day 2 — Lake Victoria Culture & Shoreline Experiences
Spend the day exploring the lakeshore. Experience local fishing life, visit markets, and take in stunning viewpoints. Depending on your interests, we can add a guided cultural visit, a gentle nature walk, or a boat experience (weather permitting).
Day 3 — Ruma National Park: First Game Drive
Transfer to Ruma National Park for your first game drive. Ruma is known for its roan antelope, as well as oribi, topi, buffalo, and a variety of birdlife. Because the park is less visited, sightings often feel unhurried and exclusive.
Day 4 — Ruma National Park: Full Safari Day
Enjoy a full day in the park with morning and afternoon drives. Your Nyota Tours driver-guide will focus on tracking roan and other key species. We’ll also take time for photography stops and birding. We’ll plan the day around the best light and animal movement.
Day 5 — Island Time: Rusinga or Mfangano (Optional)
Today is all about Lake Victoria’s island atmosphere. Choose between a relaxed island stay or a day excursion. Options can include scenic viewpoints, community-led cultural experiences, and quiet time by the water. Prefer more wildlife time? We can keep you on the mainland and add another safari activity instead.
Day 6 — Scenic Drives, Viewpoints & a Slow Afternoon
Enjoy a scenic drive through the county with stops for viewpoints and photos. This is a great day to slow down. You can add a short hike, a lakeside picnic, or simply rest at your accommodation. Nyota Tours will handle timing, permits (if needed), and logistics so you can stay present.
Day 7 — Departure
After breakfast, transfer for your onward journey. If you’d like to extend the trip, we can connect Homa Bay with Kisumu, Kakamega Forest, the Maasai Mara, or even a coast add-on in Mombasa and Diani.
